In 1977, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon was founded on the hope of building an event for all Chicagoans. For the past 42 years, runners, volunteers, spectators and community members have shown up on the streets of Chicago to support one another and to turn an individual sport into a collective experience.

While we'd hoped once again to fill 26.2 miles of our streets this October, the health and safety of everyone participating in and supporting the event is our highest priority. In response to the ongoing public health concerns brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, event organizers and the City of Chicago made the decision to cancel the 2020 Bank of America Chicago Marathon and all race weekend activities.

In light of this decision, registered participants for the 2020 event will have the option to receive a refund for their race entry or defer their place and entry fee to a future edition of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon (2021, 2022 or 2023). The event will provide an update to participants in the coming days with additional information on the options available to them.

Registered participants for the International Chicago 5K will also have the option to receive a refund or defer their entry to a future year (2021, 2022 or 2023).

Our team is hard at work developing plans for a virtual experience to recognize the dedication and commitment of everyone who would have taken part in the 43rd running of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Details on how participants, their network of supporters and fans of the sport can get involved will be shared in the coming weeks.

On a personal note to the runners who have kept our race going for more than four decades, we want to thank you for your miles, for your loyalty and for your spirit. The Bank of America Chicago Marathon has always been your race – the people's race – and with your continued commitment, we will celebrate our sport, our health and our achievement once again.

ecco dove: era nell'email di Deferred Confirmation inviatami a luglio:

The application windows and race dates of the 2021, 2022 and 2023 editions of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon have not been determined. While we can't share the exact dates at this time, historically the Chicago Marathon has been held the second Sunday of October.

e vedo ora che le FAQ sul sito dicono ancora la stessa cosa:

When will the application windows open for the 2021, 2022 or 2023 events?
The application windows for the 2021, 2022 and 2023 events have not yet been determined. An email will be sent to eligible participants when the application window is open.

Non vorrei sbagliare ma parla di "An email will be sent to eligible participants when the application window is open": non di ballot.

Io l'ho letta così: a chi avrebbe dovuto farla nel 2020 (eligible participants) manderemo una mail quando apriremo la finestra per l'iscrizione.
Che poi vorrebbe dire: una volta che si sono iscritti quelli del 2020 (o almeno la parte che vorrà farla nel 2021) tireremo le somme, vedremo quanti posti ci rimangono e se fare ballot o meno.

didieffe hai ragione ma di solito non cambia le tempistiche perchè aprono la finestra per essercitare opzione del deferrement una settimana prima di quella del ballot ma la data di chiusura è la stessa per entrambe.

Ad esempio dovevo farla nel 2018 ma poi mi sono infortunato e ho chiesto deferrement, ecco le tempistiche di allora:

- gara tenuta il 7 Ottobre 2018
- il 23 Ottobre 2018 ho ricevuto email chiedendo di esercitare l'opzione di deferrement al 2019 o tacere per sempre ("Entries must be claimed during the 2019 application window (Tuesday, October 23 – Thursday, November 29" 2018)
- il ballot per tutti era aperto dal 30 Ottobre al 29 Novembre

Certo hai ragione: di solito le persone che hanno fatto deferrement sono "relativamente poche" mentre questa volta bisogna vedere sia quanti hanno fatto deferrment sia come essi si spalmeranno nei prossimi 3 anni (sta ai singoli indicare a quale delle prossime 3 edizioni vorrebbero partecipare, ovviamente non garantiscono neanche ci sia posto per tutti nell'anno preferito).

Inoltre ora il "quando apriamo cosa" è nell'aria per tutto, se noti non hanno neanche confermato la data 2021 della gara, solo scritto che di solito la maratona si tiene la prima domenica di Ottobre.
